World Studies

World studies is a very broad category that covers subjects such as geography and history. Students can gain valuable knowledge by creating timelines of events that occurred throughout the history of the world. Timelines can be created for each geographic area or for each century. By comparing the same time periods for two different countries, for example, students can gain an understanding of how the people and places in the world are interconnected.

Test Trade offers a very comprehensive practice test with 300 multiple-choice questions. Students can use the practice test a few different ways. First, students can take the test to assess their current level of knowledge. After reviewing the incorrect answers, students will understand the areas that require further attention and study. Second, students can use the practice test as a study guide. In a multiple-choice question, it is helpful to know why a correct answer is correct, but it is also helpful to be able to explain why the incorrect answers are incorrect. Finally, students can use the practice test to create a key terms list by reviewing each of the answers presented in the practice test and creating a list of terms. For example, the possible answers to a question may be a) the Alps, b) the Rockies, c) the Andes, or d) the Himalayas. All of these terms refer to mountain ranges. Students could create a list of the mountain ranges throughout the world and arrange the list in order of geographic location or overall height.

While the practice test provides only multiple-choice questions, students should also be familiar with true/false questions, fill-in-the-blank questions, and essay-style questions. It is very common for history tests to use all or some essay questions. In order to prepare for essay questions, students should use a blank piece of paper or an index card. Write the topic on the top of the page, for example, The Civil War. Next, create an outline of the important facts associated with the Civil War. Include items such as dates, important battles, notable figures, causes, and the results. By creating a visual connection on paper between the Civil War and some of its details, students are more likely to recall the information for a test.
